Home Sweet Home ~ Micro Living

Have you ever lived, or know someone who lives a micro lifestyle?  Tiny homes are rapidly appearing all over the world.   I’m pretty sure it’s largely down to the increase in the amount of people now living on their own.  So many singles no longer want the large spacious home.

My first experience of a miniature home was in the 1970’s, an amazing tree house my dad built in a wood near to our house for my brother and I and all the kids in the neighbourhood to play in.  It was such fun, and we were so lucky to have a dad who was a skilled carpenter who assisted in building real homes.  The last video in this list (Dan Price’s underground home) reminds me a lot of our adorable little tree house.  Quite a different way to live, but perfect I would imagine if you’re looking for some serious solitude.

I live in a micro home myself, on the upper floor of a house divided into two flats.  It isn’t perfect, it could do with a lot more improvement, but it’s very cosy, ideal for one person.  So I find these little homes a real fascination, and identify with that kind of living.  I wish mine was as well thought out as many of these are.  I certainly got some great space saving ideas watching these videos!

I had real trouble deciding which one was my favourite.  I think the (itsy bitsy apartment) is the one I relate to most, as it has a similarity to my own home.  (Thank you to Rebecca for sending me a link to that one!) But I’m in love with them all – I want to take a holiday in each tiny one!! 😀

misao-and-fukumaru-2I created a post on this lovely lady from Japan with her handsome cat on Tumblr a while back, I was amazed at the popularity of the post.  I discovered they were pretty much all over the internet.  Misao found Fukumaru when he was a stray kitten.  Look at him now – internet star!! 😀

All the photography has been taken by Misao’s granddaughter Miyoko who wanted to compile a record of her grandmothers life.  She has now published those images in a beautiful book.

Miyoko says of her grandmother, “When I see the way my grandmother is living her life, I really feel that she has a kind of strength that my generation simply can’t match.  She gets up with the sun, and goes to bed when it sets.  She loves her cat and the vegetables in her field like her own children.  If her vegetables come out well, she’s happy.  She doesn’t have to worry about questions like ’what is the point of my work?’  Her way of life fills me with admiration and a sort of envy.”  Read more….

Yi Peng, Lantern Festival, Thailand

yi-peng-lantern-festival-chiang-mai-7

I’m not usually into ceremonies or annual festivals, but this festival in Thailand looks so stunning, I’d be tempted to attend this celebration if I was on holiday in that direction.   Each lantern released represents letting go of negativity.  I like the positive thought behind that.  Much better than New Year resolutions.  It must be really hot though, standing in an enormous crowd with all those giant lanterns burning!

If you want to know the details and information on what else goes on at this festival you’ll find it all covered in the first video.  Presented in excellent style by Jubril Agoro.

The second video gives a good feel as to what it would be like to be actually there.  It’s interesting but a little slow to the build up of releasing those lanterns.  If you skip the video to 1 minute 10 seconds, that’s when the lanterns all get released in a mass floating.  Impressive and very bright!

tumblr_mhmlc2S0s41qm8fzgo5_r1_1280I’m tempted to say how beautiful, because it is – but it’s a spider!!

I was amazed when I first saw this Peacock Spider, I’ve never seen anything like it before, and look how tiny they are!

Apologies to any of you who hate spiders, but I couldn’t resist sharing this colourful dancing insect!

Skydiving Woman Falls Out Of Harness

There aren’t many You Tube videos that leave me with my mouth wide open in horror, but this one succeeded!  This very brave lady decided to go skydiving for her 80th birthday, but somehow her harness was much loser than it should have been, she began to slip out of it in mid air and came very close to falling to earth without a parachute attached.  Thankfully she and her skydiving partner managed to land without any injury.   A very lucky escape!

Chicago Triple Lightning Strike – June 2014

chicago-lightning-strike-2014-20.
Pictures and Film by

Chicago Lightning Strike 2014.

Thunder storms are something I really dislike, I love the look of them from the distance, wonderfully dramatic, art in the sky, but when those forks of light move closer – oh no, I want it to move on quick!

I’ve have had a few close shaves with lightning over the years and that has changed the way I view storms.  When I was sixteen I witnessed a huge bolt of lightning strike the ground directly outside a window I was sitting very close to, and strangely there wasn’t even a hint of a storm at the time.  Hard to imagine I know, just one giant bolt of lightning heading in my direction, but believe me I wasn’t hallucinating.  I’ve been very nervous of thunderstorms since that day!

We lived in a village very high on a hill, and when thunderstorms passed by they were pretty ferocious sometimes, our village appeared to take a real battering.  I’m glad where I live now is low and relatively flat land, it makes a real difference, those storm are a lot more bearable.

But when I see a giant storm like this one in Chicago (a triple lightning strike on three of it’s tallest buildings: Willis Tower, Trump Tower and the John Hancock Building) I wonder why I worry about storms in Britain.  That’s one hell of a storm!!!  Stunning photography though, must be a real thrill to capture images like these.

So, does anyone have a storm story to scare me with?gfxlovers.com/smilies

Paddy And Nico – Britain’s Got Talent

paddy-and-nico-01.

She is Paddy and he is Nico, and together they amazed Britian’s Got Talent this year with an unexpected and totally stunning Salsa dance.  When they first began their routine, the faces of the judges seemed to show they thought it was going to be dull or possibly embarrassing.  But I’m sure they knew it was going to be spectacular as this lady and her dancing partner had already won a talent show in Spain in 2009.  This 80 year old woman has some real strength, if you haven’t seen it, I guarantee it will make you smile!  Read more about Paddy Jones.

Smarty Pins – Google Map Trivia

smarty-pins-003.

Google have introduced a new map based trivia game called Smarty Pins.  Yeah I know, it sounds like an extension to Pinterest!!

I’m not usually into trivia at all, but this one was quite good fun, and I got a much better result than I thought I would.  I can see people using this on their phones to pass a few boring moments, and also very good for increasing knowledge as to where people, places and countries are.

.

smarty-pins-2-001.

Just select a category, then press Start A New Game, and away you go.  If you don’t know the answer you can press the Take A Hint button which gives you a strong hint as to which direction to place that pin.  Have fun!
